(pressebox) Monheim, 29.11.2008 – Manufacturers in the paints, coatings and inks industries are increasingly demanding solutions that combine outstanding performance with environmental sustainability. At the CHINACOAT 2008 trade show, specialty chemicals supplier Cognis exhibited innovative products for the Chinese market that fulfill these demands. Among them were Loxanol EFC 200 and 300 coalescent agents, the Disponil range of surfactants for emulsion polymerization, and FoamStar A10 and A12.
Environmental issues are the subject of much concern these days, and consumer interest in environmentally sound paints and coatings, and especially in solvent-free and aqueous systems, has risen rapidly. At the show, Cognis presented Loxanol EFC 200 and 300, two new natural oil-based coalescents that are both free from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as defined in EU directives 1999/13/EU and 2004/42/EU. EFC 200 is essentially free of VOC by US-EPA guidelines as well. Compared to competitor products, EFC 300 helps exterior coatings to harden faster and to improve dirt pick-up resistance. With improved efficiency, it lowers minimum film forming temperature (MFFT), which can lead to cost savings. The use of Loxanol EFC 200 in interior paints allows manufacturing of odor-free paints that retain excellent flexibility while improving block resistance.
Alternative surfactant systems from renewable raw materials
One of the key issues facing manufacturers of paints and coatings is the need to move away from environmentally problematic surfactants, such as alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs). To address this issue, Cognis developed its Disponil AFX surfactant systems for use in the polymerization process. Based on non-ionic emulsifiers, these alternative surfactant systems are made from renewable raw materials, and are therefore highly biodegradable. Using them puts manufacturers in a position to apply for environmental certifications, such as the EU Ecolabel for paints and varnishes used in interior decoration. Disponil AFX products are comparable to APE-based systems in terms of both cost-effectiveness and performance, and are suitable for a variety of technical applications. Local production combines the expertise of 160 years of experience in the business of oleochemical processing with a short and highly capable supply chain.
Cognis also presented the FoamStar A-10 and FoamStar A-12, two high efficiency, versatile in use defoamers that are now produced in China. They are well suited for use in acrylic, styrene acrylic, and vinyl acrylic paint systems. FoamStar A-10 and A-12 effectively inhibit foaming at the molecular level, while also enhancing other coating properties. Easy to handle and offering superior visual appearance, they enable manufacturers to produce water-based interior and exterior paints with excellent foaming resistance for all methods of paint application and with high water dilution. As they are nearly twice as efficient as common mineral oil defoamers, they are in line with the trend towards sustainability and environmental soundness.
