Die neue iPhone Generation trägt den Namen 3G S, wobei das S für speed steht und das Modell somit über einen deutlich schnelleren Prozessor verfügt. Neben einer 3-Mega-Pixel Kamera mit Autofokus, die sowohl Fotos als auch Videos aufzeichnen kann, ist der Internetzugang per HSDPA mit 7,2 Mbit/s einer der momentan schnellsten. Weiterhin beinhaltet das neue iPhone einen eingebauten Kompass, sowie eine verbesserte Nike+ Unterstützung. Die Möglichkeit Texte vorlesen zu lassen und eine verbesserte Akkulaufzeit (30 Stunden Musikwiedergabe, 12 Stunden Telefonie oder 8 Stunden im Internet surfen) sind ebenfalls neu hinzugefügt wurden.

Erhältlich ist das neue Modell, dass sich im Design kaum vom alten unterscheidet, mit 16 oder 32 GB Speicherplatz. Leider sind über die Preise in Deutschland noch keine Informationen verfügbar, doch es wird damit gerechnet, dass T-Mobile jederzeit etwas bekannt geben könnte. In USA wird man das iPhone 3G S wahrscheinlich für (99 Dollar für alte iPhone 3G  -) 299 Dollar bekommen können.

Betriebssystem 3.0 für das iPhone ab 17. Juni

Ab dem 17. Juni ist das neue iPhone Betriebssystem für alle iPhone Besitzer kostenlos erhältlich. Eine besonders wichtige Neuerung, neben 100 neuen Features, wird die Nutzung des iPhones als Modem für Mac oder PC sein. Nach der Freischaltung beim jeweiligen Netzbetreiber kann dies über Bluetooth oder Netzkabel geschehen. HTML-5-Unterstützung hat jetzt neuerdings der Mobile-Safari-Browser und kann somit zum Beispiel Passwörter speichern und unterstützt Audio- und Video Streaming über HTTP. Weitere Neuerungen gibt es im Bereich der Spiele, die nun über Bluetooth miteinander gekoppelt werden können.

Ist das iPhone mal verloren gegangen, sorgt eine bestimmte Funktion dafür, dass das Handy, selbst bei der eingestellten “Lautlos-Funktion”, durch ein akustisches Signal wiederzufinden ist oder z.B. bei Diebstahl sogar gelöscht werden kann.

Navigation von TomTom:

Ab kommendem Sommer soll eine Navigations-Software für das iPhone vom Hersteller TomTom verfügbar sein. Sprachbefehle und optische Hinweise für die Navigation sollen auf der Basis der iPhone-3.0-Firmware vermittelt werden können. Als Zusatz soll es eine Autohalterung mit Akku-Ladefunktion geben.

Die Sprachsteuerungsfunktion des iPhone 3G S ermöglicht Freisprech-Bedienung sowohl der iPhone- als auch der iPod-Funktionen. Man muss lediglich die passenden Anweisungen in das eingebaute Mikrofon oder Head Set Mikrofon sprechen, um über Namen oder Nummer zu wählen. Mit der Sprachsteuerung kann man seine Lieblingsmusik anhand des Künstlers, Albums oder der Playlist abspielen. Das Kommando ‘Spiele bitte mehr Lieder wie dieses’ (Play more songs like this) aktiviert die Genius Funktion. Man kann dem iPhone zudem sagen, die Musik zu pausieren, das nächste Stück abzuspielen, den Shuffle Modus zu aktivieren oder es fragen ‘Was wird gerade gespielt?’ (What´s playing right now?).

Das iPhone 3G S beinhaltet einen neuen, eingebauten digitalen Kompass für sofortige Orientierung.*** Das Kompass-App zeigt an, welchen Weg man gerade einschlägt und dreht sich sobald man die Marschrichtung ändert. Man kann sich am geographischen oder am magnetischen Norden orientieren und das ins iPhone integrierte GPS zeigt automatisch die Koordinaten der aktuellen Position an. Der neue eingebaute digitale Kompass ist außerdem in ‘Maps’ integriert, dadurch richtet es jede Karte an der eigenen Blickrichtung aus.

Das iPhone 3G S bietet neue Zugriffsfunktionen, darunter VoiceOver, einen Bildschirmleser, der ansagt was auf dem iPhone 3G S Display erscheint und es dadurch in ihrer Sehfähigkeit eingeschränkten Personen möglich macht, zu telefonieren, E-Mails zu lesen, Webseiten zu durchstöbern, Musik abzuspielen und Anwendungen auszuführen. Die neue universelle Zoom-Funktion vergrößert den gesamten Bildschirm und das ‘White on Black’ Feature invertiert die Farben des Displays, um Personen mit schlechter Sehfähigkeit einen höheren Kontrast zu bieten. Falls man das iPhone nicht finden kann, ist es möglich, sämtliche Daten und Inhalte auf dem entsprechenden iPhone über das ‘Remote Wipe’ Feature zu löschen. Zu den neuen, im Rahmen der iPhone 3.0 Software verfügbaren iTunes Funktionen gehört der drahtlose Download von Filmen, TV- und Audio-Programmen, sowie von iTunes U, sodass Studenten ihre Lernmaterialien unterwegs herunterladen können.

Juni kostenlos für alle iPhone Nutzer als Software Update über iTunes 8.2 oder neuer erhältlich sein. Besitzer eines iPod touch können das Software Update für 7,99 Euro inkl MwSt. erwerben. Die neuen MobileMe Features für das iPhone erfordern iPhone OS 3.0. MobileMe ist als jährlicher Abonnement-basierter Dienst für 79 Euro inkl. MwSt. erhältlich.

iPhone 3G S will be available in the US on June 19 for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) for the 16GB model and just $299 (US) for the new 32GB model in both Apple and AT&T’s retail and online stores, Best Buy and Wal-Mart stores. iPhone 3G S requires a new two year contract with AT&T for qualifying customers. iPhone OS 3.0 software will be available on June 17 as a free software update via iTunes 8.2 or later for all iPhone customers. iPod touch customers will be able to purchase a software update for $9.95 (US). Beginning June 8, iPhone 3G will be available for just $99 (US) for the 8GB model. New MobileMe features for iPhone require iPhone OS 3.0. MobileMe is available for an annual subscription price of $99 (US).
